How ReUp's Personas Deliver Personalized Coaching at Scale
ReUp's patented Personas model combines data and human coaching to support adult learners at scale, helping them re-enroll, persist, and graduate.
More than 40 million Americans have some college credit but no credential. These learners often have strong motivations to return — but complex personal, financial, and professional barriers stand in their way.
To address this, ReUp developed its Personas model: a patented, data-driven approach that combines technology with the human touch of coaching to meet each learner where they are. No two learners face the same obstacles, and Personas was built with that reality in mind.
Understanding ReUp Personas
ReUp Personas are dynamic, data-driven profiles that evolve over time — much like a health assessment. Rather than placing learners into rigid categories, Personas adapt continuously as new information is gathered, ensuring each learner receives support that reflects their current situation and ongoing growth.
Personas are rooted in a key insight from years of supporting adult learners: success isn’t determined by academic performance alone. Instead, it’s shaped by an individual’s overall health across five interconnected areas of life — what ReUp calls the Spheres:
- External — family, support systems, caretaking responsibilities, work, and career aspirations
- Self — confidence, mental health, and personal aspirations
- University — academic history and relationship with the institution
- Finances — financial barriers and access to resources
- Coach — openness to and engagement with coaching
Using natural language processing and machine learning, ReUp’s patented technology analyzes millions of data points from learner interactions — via phone, email, text, and surveys — to dynamically classify learners into one of over 2,000 Personas. Each Persona is linked to tailored intervention strategies, helping coaches quickly identify what a learner needs to re-enroll and persist.
Why Personas matter
- Deep insights into learners’ lives. Personas capture not just the “what” but the “why” behind each learner’s challenges and goals — focusing on the nuanced dimensions of their relationships and circumstances.
- Scalable personalization. Personas equip Success Coaches with the insights needed to support thousands of adult learners without sacrificing individual care.
- Actionable recommendations. Each Persona is connected to research-backed coaching strategies, offering clear next steps to help learners move forward.
How Personas guide our work
Identifying barriers and enablers
Through interactions and responses to outreach, ReUp assigns learners an identifier that flags which Spheres need more support. For example, a learner showing need in the Finance Sphere but strength in the External Sphere might be managing financial insecurity from defaulted student loans while benefiting from strong family support. A Success Coach can use that knowledge to prioritize financial aid resources while building on the learner’s existing support system to reinforce confidence.
Tailored interventions
Personas provide concrete strategies to address each learner’s specific needs at a given point in time. A learner showing confidence in the Self Sphere — motivated by the desire to be a role model for their children — might be supported by highlighting the long-term impact of their education and helping them secure a flexible class schedule that fits their commitments.
Combining technology with human connection
While Personas technology classifies learners and recommends strategies, Success Coaches deliver that support with empathy and adaptability. They build meaningful relationships with learners, ensuring each intervention aligns with the individual’s evolving needs. Persona insights also inform the content and resources available within ReUp’s learner-facing platform.
How Personas shape coaching in practice
Personas help Success Coaches understand each learner’s unique situation — making conversations more focused and more meaningful.
“This is a tool that empowers Success Coaches to guide learners in a way that is both efficient and deeply personalized,” says John Reyes, Manager of ReUp Learner Services. “Personas help me focus my curiosity in the right areas, so I can see the learner’s situation more holistically and ask better questions.”
The flexibility of the tool means coaches can adapt as conversations evolve. “They’re a guide, not a script,” Reyes adds. “Coaches still have the freedom to ask the right questions and adapt resources, but Personas reduce the mental load of figuring out what areas to explore.”
Personas also support coaches as learners progress further in their journeys. “When a learner moves into the maintenance stage of change, their coaching needs can shift,” Reyes notes. “The tool gives us a way to revisit past conversations and connect them to the present — keeping coaching relevant and focused without losing sight of earlier challenges.”
Personas in action
Patrick, 46 — ride-share driver and first-generation degree seeker
Patrick had always dreamed of being the first in his family to earn a degree. After losing financial aid 15 years ago, he assumed defaulted student loans would block his return to school. ReUp’s Persona technology identified low confidence in his Finance Sphere. Through coaching, he learned about repayment plans and found an online program that fit his schedule. As his financial confidence grew, so did his readiness to see his degree through to completion.
Claudia, 35 — IT specialist and Army veteran
Claudia was skeptical about pursuing a traditional four-year degree but wanted a credential that could advance her career. ReUp’s Persona technology identified skepticism in her University Sphere and pointed her toward industry-specific certifications and online programs with minimal general education requirements. Her Success Coach addressed her concerns about cost and time, helping her enroll with confidence.
ReUp results
ReUp has supported over one million adult learners, with more than 48,000 re-enrollments and 6,000+ graduates to date — a direct reflection of the measurable impact Persona-informed coaching has on learner outcomes.
Broader benefits for institutions
ReUp’s Persona-driven approach doesn’t just benefit individual learners — it also addresses institutional priorities. Personas data reveals the overall health of an institution’s adult learner population, sentiment across each Sphere, and how both shift over time.
- Increased re-enrollment rates. Persona-driven strategies identify learners with the highest intent to re-enroll, allowing institutions to concentrate efforts where they’ll have the greatest impact. On average, adult learners go through 28 activities before deciding to return — Personas help streamline that process.
- Improved retention and graduation. By addressing both academic and personal challenges, Personas foster greater persistence — critical for institutions supporting vulnerable SCNC populations while maintaining retention goals.
- Scalability for larger cohorts. Personas technology allows institutions to scale support without diluting quality — a meaningful advantage as enrollment strategies increasingly focus on adult learners.
- Actionable institutional insights. Persona data creates dynamic feedback loops and population-level insights, helping institutions identify root causes and adapt policies, programs, and services to better meet learner needs — supporting both outcomes and broader equity goals.
The future of adult learner success
Adult learners represent the future of higher education. Institutions that embed personalized, technology-powered support into their enrollment strategies are best positioned to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape. ReUp’s patented Personas offer a scalable, innovative way to understand and support adult learners with both empathy and precision.
